What is an Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is focused on mobilizing a specific joint that is fixated, in order to restore normal function. A fixated joint can have dramatic effects on all of the surrounding muscles, joints, nerves, and any other tissue which that nerve affects. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to make sure that every joint is operating at optimal capacity. A chiropractor will address all parts of the fixation: the joint itself, the muscles, and the nerves. The audible sound, which is sometimes heard during the adjustment, is the sound of Oxygen, Nitrogen and CO2 being released due to the opening of the joint space.
Dr. Andrea Hoglen employs a variety of techniques with varying approaches. Many people have a mental image of what a chiropractic adjustment looks like, but since every person is different, your experience will be unique to you. This is why Dr. Andrea carefully selects the proper joint adjustment, muscle care, and gentle rehabilitative techniques which are best for each individual patient.

Does an Adjustment Hurt?

People usually feel instant relief after a spinal adjustment. Patients tend to get off the table feeling more relaxed, higher energy, and with significantly less discomfort. Patients that have a severe pain level, or who have experienced a dramatic injury sometimes experience momentary pain during the actual adjustment because ANY movement during the acute phase causes them pain, but after a proper course of treatment they usually feel relief and a significant decrease in the pain level.

Do Many People See a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic is the 3rd largest primary health care profession in the western world next to Medicine and Dentistry. It is estimated that between 10-15% of the population are currently under Chiropractic Care.

Is a Chiropractor a Real Doctor?

Doctors of Chiropractic and Doctors of Medicine take a similar class load. However, when a medical doctor would focus more on pharmaceutical therapies, a chiropractor spends more time studying nutrition, biomechanics, and muscular therapies. Residencies are required by both degrees prior to graduation. These entail the student successfully completing several hundred clinical hours of “real” patient management in a clinical setting under professional supervision. Most Chiropractic colleges require students to partake in a clinical externship program which places them in actual chiropractic offices, which allows them to enhance their knowledge on clinical skills, as well as, how to run an office from all aspects. Both chiropractors and medical doctors have to successfully complete National Board Exams prior to obtaining a license through the Health Department of their chosen state(s). Continuing education is then required to maintain a high level of competency and to stay up to date on the latest research and techniques for both doctorate degrees.
In the State of Michigan a chiropractor is currently required to obtain 30+ hours of continuing education (per licensing period) with required coursework in pain management, ethics & boundaries, ordering and performance of tests, and physical measures. Dr. Andrea Hoglen also strives to continue her education with training in modern nutritional techniuqes, athletic rehab, and pediatric care.

Do Chiropractors Treat More than Back Pain?

Yes! Since chiropractors adjust the spine, and the spine is the framework that protects the central nervous system, a chiropractor can affect everything in the body! Chiropractors often address nerve issues affecting the internal organs as well as caring for back pain. Its true, chiropractic is the BEST choice for taking care of back pain; it is safer and more cost-effective than drugs, surgery, or other traditional treatments. However, chiropractors can also help take care of headaches, ear infections, colic, ADD, sinus issues, common cold, dysmenorrhea (painful menses), ulcers, bowel complications, muscle or tendon injuries, along with many more.
As a wellness oriented chiropractor, Dr. Andrea Hoglen focuses on preventative care. Once your body is healed, her focus shifts to keeping you healthy and preventing illness! Remember: 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'!

Is Chiropractic Care SAFE?

Chiropractic adjustments are safe when performed by a licensed chiropractor, but can be dangerous when performed by another healthcare professional that is less trained in the area of expertise. Someone who is not specifically trained in proper adjusting techniques should NEVER adjust you! In almost all cases where injury from an adjustment was reported, the person attempting the adjustment was NOT a chiropractor. It has been shown that adjustments performed by a trained & licensed chiropractor are among the safest and most effective ways to treat back and neck pain. Conservative chiropractic care should be pursued in most cases before considering drug and surgical intervention.
The result of injury following a chiropractic treatment is less than 0.01% according to medical studies. This hardly even compares with the much higher risk of invasive procedures involving injections, medications, and surgeries. Some people fear they will have a stroke if their neck is adjusted, but the research suggests that the chance of having a stroke after a spinal manipulation is about 1 in 1,000,000. This means that you have a better chance of being struck by lightning. In addition, Dr. Andrea has trained specifically to use gentle adjusting techniques with absolutely 0% risk of stroke for any individuals who might be at risk.

Will I Have to See A Chiropractor for Life?

Many people choose to make a lifelong commitment to their health by seeing their chiropractior for periodic check-ups, much like you visit the dentist for a cleaning once every six months.
Others choose to make their chiropractor their primary natural healthcare provider. This means that they seek out nutritional, holistic solutions to their health concerns BEFORE turning to things like drugs and surgeries. Many patients come to Dr. Andrea with colds, flu, stomach aches, ear infections, skin concerns, and other maladies. Dr. Andrea Hoglen aids her patients as naturally as possible, and refers patients to other qualified physicians as necessary.
Often the patients who choose to make chiropractic part of their lifelong health plan do so because they feel younger, more vibrant, and more energetic after visiting their chiropractor. These individuals choose to seek out chiropractic treatment at the first sign of an ache or a pain, because they know that they don't have to suffer with it.
